Swans and Auctions

Close to the town of Clitheroe Pendleton is another Lancashire village blessed with a famous pub the swan with two necks was according to folklore the scene of an unusual auction when a regular customer sold his wife to the highest bidder. Many stories of this practice can be found all over the country indeed Hardys mayor of Casterbridge was guilty of the same misdeed.

The swan with two necks most probably gets its name from the practice of marking swans bills with little nicks as used by the Vintners Company with swans on the River Thames. The pub dates from 1776 and has changed little over the years. In past times superstition about witchcraft was said to thrive in the village, these old folklore legends abound in Lancashire the most famous centring on nearby Pendle hill.

Pendleton was mentioned in the doomsday book in the Middle Ages monks travelling between the abbeys of Whalley and Sawley passed through the village. The village is surrounded by the hills of Pendleton moor; climbing up to the top affords great views of the Pennines, forest of Bowland and the Fylde coast.
