Wingham

On approaching the Village of Wingham, St Mary’s Church is the first sign you are near the village, the village is full of mediaeval houses and a grand 18th century brick mansion which are grouped around the church. Nearby is Broad High Street, which is lined with Tudor and Georgian buildings all, edged with grass verges and trees.

Wingham’s proximity to Canterbury made it famous as a stopping place for such people as King John, Edward I and Edward III as it lay on the routes to the port of Sandwich.

Queen Elizabeth the first also stayed in Wingham on her progress through Kent, near the church, there is a row of timber frame buildings the Dog Inn and the Red lion both display the date 1286 which was when the buildings were used as part of St Mary’s College church.
