Pubs and Dr Johnson

Ashbourne nestling in hills in Derbyshire is on the edge of the Peak district national park, the town has some fine historical buildings scattered among the many independent shops. The town was a stopping point for pilgrims on the way to Dunstable to visit a shrine, these days it is known as the gateway to Dovedale and Peak District and is popular with walkers and those interested in outdoor pursuits.

The town has some interesting historical facts, Bonnie prince Charles stayed here on his advance to London and also on his retreat during the Jacobite rising of 1745. The lexicographer and writer Dr Samuel Johnson was a frequent visitor to the town and stayed in the mansion opposite the grammar school.

Another famous local landmark is the green Man public house, this Georgian inn has an unusual sign which spans the street gallows style with the name inscribed on it. The town is a great base to stay for visitors to the Peaks, Ashbourne is also known for the unusually large amount of public houses both past and present for a town of its size.
