Sandwich is synonymous with the great British culinary invention the sandwich; this was the brainchild of the 4th Earl who wanted something quick so he could carry on gambling.
The town has an amazing history it was once the fourth city in the country after London, Norwich, and Ipswich.
Sandwich was also a Cinque port this medieval town has a wealth of beautiful architecture and interesting buildings such as 14th -15th century Church of St clement, a 14th century gateway on the quay, and the Guildhall built in 1579 inside this latter there is a collection of silver maces.
The town’s status as one of the countries busiest port declined when the river silted up. This decline in part helped the town preserve its past and it became a market town.
