Upper Slaughter

The slaughters despite the ugly name are both villages of great charm and beauty, Upper Slaughter is seen here is with the crystal clear River Eye bubbling along under the oak trees, this lovely village is also popular with artists and photographers. The village was home to the 19th century rector F.E Witts who wrote Diary of a Cotswold parson.

Both villages are less than a mile apart, there is a lovely walk connecting the two villages. The name slaughter is subject to debate some attribute it from the 12th century lord of the manor, de Sclotre altered over time by country folk to Slaughter. Others say it is an old name for muddy place; these small but picturesque villages are seen on countless calendars and postcards and attract many visitors.
