Church Stretton

Cradled in the deep valley of the long Mynd and the Caradoc hills the town is popular with cyclists, and walkers going to Cardingmill valley and the Long Mynd.

The town’s heyday was in Victorian times when it was a spa with the well-heeled flocking here to take the waters and enjoy the fresh air.

The town has many black and white timbered houses some of which are Victorian in build; many though still have original frontages dating from 1680 when they were rebuilt following a fire.

The town was granted a charter in the reign of King John and has regular markets , there is also a food festival and apple fair, the town was once a centre for brewing with many micro-breweries, Church Stretton’s calcium rich mineral water is bottled locally and sold all over England.

The Norman church of Lawrence has an interesting carving of a Sheila-na-gig above the North Door; the tourist information office is in the adjacent street.
