Kirkcudbright

The town of Kirkcudbright lies on the Dee estuary the towns name is believed to be derived from St Cuthbert’s Kirk the saint who converted much of southern Scotland to Christianity.

The town has many fine 17th and 18th century merchants’ town houses, and the harbour is most picturesque and the town is a good base to explore the south of Scotland.

The high street has been restored and there are many quaint little streets called wynds that are fun to explore, Kirk wynds climbs steeply up to the parish church. This attractive town was has been home to an artist’s colony since the end of the 19th century.

Nearby is the fortified manor of McClelland’s castle, the high street tollbooth is well worth a visit this is one of the oldest in Scotland and is now an art gallery.
