The 12th century chronicler Geoffrey of Monmouth named Caerleon as the supposed location of King Arthur’s court it was visited by the famous poet and author Alfred Lord Tennyson while writing his idylls of the king, he stayed in the Hanbury Arms by the river.

The town however has another more important historical note it was one of the largest and most important roman forts in Britain. One of only three legionary forts in Britain along with York and Chester, it was home to the 2nd Augustan legion. The town was important strategically as it is near the border with wales Situated on the river Usk.

The town has extensive roman remains along with an excellent museum,the national roman museum, it has some great artefacts on display other roman remains include the amphitheatre and the romans baths.
Caerleon was fought over by the Saxons, Vikings, Normans and welsh the Normans built a castle but all that remains is the mound where the keep stood.
