Grantham

The town of Grantham was a staging post on the London to York road, coaches thundered in an out and the local inns and Hostelry’s flourished, places such as the Angel and Royal and the George were popular stop overs. The George, which dates from the 18th century, was described in Dickens’s novel Nicholas Nickleby.

One of the finest buildings in Grantham is the 15th century Grammar school now called the kings; its greatest pupil was Sir Isaac Newton his carved name on a windowsill can still be seen today. Newton lived with his parents in nearby Woolthorpe and it is here that he had his revelation under the apple tree.

There is an interesting visitor’s centre with activities for children in the science room as well as a cafe.

Grantham’s other notable resident was Margaret Thatcher the famed iron lady whose father owned a green grocers store at no 2 North parade, Margaret Thatcher was Britain’s first female prime minister and was renowned for her strong leadership.
