Lyndhurst

Lyndhurst in the new forest is often called the capitol, it is the only town in the historical boundaries of the new forest. In 1079, it was made the administrative centre by William I and to this day, it is the seat of the ancient court of verderers who were formed to protect the rights of the commoners.

The courtroom is located in a beautiful 17th century house called Queens House along with the offices of the forestry commission.

Lyndhurst's main Street is busy in the peak season it is full of tourist shops cafes and restaurants, but with many narrow streets leading off you can find peace and quiet to admire the Georgian and Victorian architecture. On the high street, the glorious church has Pre-Raphaelite art, with windows designed by Burne- Jones, as well as a fresco by Lord Leighton.

In the village churchyard, you will find the resting place of Mrs Hargreaves who died in 1934 aka Alice Liddell who was the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in wonderland. Lyndhurst also has the New forest centre which houses the tourist information office as well as a small museum, inside the exhibits are about the forest and the people who lived there.
