The city of Leicester has a history that goes back two thousand years sadly it suffered much destruction in the Second World War from bombing raids. The city however has recovered and has benefitted from the arrival of settlers from the Indian subcontinent and is now a cosmopolitan melting pot with restaurants, temples and mosques to be seen around the city.

The Cathedral is a fine medieval building and recently was selected to receive the remains of King Richard III as it was from Leicester Castle that he rode out to meet his destiny on red moor plain at the battle of Bosworth.

Other fine buildings can be found such as the Guildhall this well preserved building is one of the finest in England it is also reputed to be the most haunted in Leicester. The remains of Leicester castle with its impressive gateway known as the magazine can be found near the Newarke houses mansions where there is a good museum.

On St Nicholas circle there’s the Jewry wall museum where you can find out about the history of the town and see some fine roman remains. The new walk museum and art gallery has dinosaur exhibits as well as some fine paintings, the Egyptian section is informative and fun with Boris Karloff sharing space with real mummies.

The kids will love to visit the national space centre which is just north of the city this is full of interactive displays that document space missions as well as astronomy displays. A bus service operates from Charles Street to the space centre.
