Scarborough

The town of Scarborough has long been associated with donkey rides on the sands, ice cream, and paddling in the sea, its fame as a well-known seaside resort on the east coast of England conjuring up long summer holidays in the sun.

Its fame as a seaside resort began surprisingly a good few years back when in 1620 a Mrs Elizabeth Farrow proclaimed the waters from the local spring must have some medicinal properties, as they tasted so disagreeable. She was right they contained Epson salts and several other minerals; the result was that the spa was born in 1626.

Further, on in time a local doctor pronounced that sea bathing was beneficial to the health and in 1730, the bathing carriages duly arrived, and Scarborough the holiday resort was on the map.

Scarborough was known in roman times they had a signalling station there to warn of sea raiders; later the Normans built the castle. This despite the ravages of time and Cromwell in the civil wars is still an impressive sight high up on the promontory in a spectacular position commanding views over both bays.

These days Scarborough is developing as different kind of holiday destination and although all the classic trappings of the usual seaside town are still present it is developing as a Centre for Digital industries. The spa has been redeveloped into an entertainment and conference centre and the old museum into an arts centre and studios.

Around the town, nice restaurants and chic cafes are emerging; Scarborough is a good base for walkers with fine coastal walks and as base to explore inland.

Places to visit include-
The castle with great views over the bays.

Rotunda museum which has fine geological displays.

The Sea life centre and sanctuary.

The church of St Mary’s, Anne Bronte is buried here.
