Stornoway

This busy place is the capital of the Outer Hebrides and the major town; it is situated on the east coast of Lewis on a natural harbour on the Eye peninsular.

Lewis is the bigger of the two islands and both have their own identity, the islanders fierce independence give the place its character. This can be seen on the Sunday as the island respects the Sabbath day and virtually closes down,if you are staying on the island be prepared for this as everything stops from Saturday lunchtime till Monday morning.

The town was a centre for the herring trade but this has now declined although there is still a small fleet. These days tourism and like Harris the production of the world famous tweed are the main industry. Pristine beaches fresh air and solitude can be experienced in plenty and like the other islands; it is a good place to unwind.
