Lerwick

This maritime town prospered and evolved through the herring trade, Lerwick is Shetlands main town and has the largest population, sitting perfectly protected in its natural harbour in the side of the hill overlooking Bressay sound.

The harbour is busy with oil boats and the fishing fleet coming and going through the beautiful clear blue waters of the sound, it makes an attractive sight with the island of Bressay sat in the waters of the North Sea.

Commercial Street is a pleasant stroll and the town has a good modern museum that is full of cultural interest relating to the islands and its people spanning 5000 years.
