Cheltenham Spa


The grand town of Cheltenham or perhaps more correctly Cheltenham Spa has been a tourist destination for 300 years. Ever since mineral springs were discovered in 1716 and later visited by George III the town emerged as the place to be seen. Captain Henry Skillicorne 1678–1763 is credited with being the first entrepreneur to recognise the opportunity to exploit the mineral springs. These days it plays host to various international festivals and events and is well known for its racecourse.

Wander the Montpellier district, Cheltenham with its chic shopping areas, restaurants, cafes, and gardens all set amidst pretty parks and stunning regency architecture is a great place to visit. Take a stroll along the promenade for some retail therapy, on your way stop to admire the magnificent Neptune fountain modelled on Rome’s Trevi, set in front of some beautiful terraced houses.

Whether you are going to the races, the gold cup is the start of the season, or just want to take the waters there is plenty to do. Visit the pump room in Pittville Park and try the spa water. If its culture you are after the Art gallery and museum has an internationally renowned collection by the arts and crafts movement.

A visit to the birthplace museum of Gustav Holst is recommended for classical music fans where you can see the interior of a typical regency terraced house of the time, complete with displays and memorabilia to the great composer.
