Wellow maypoles

Wellow
The village of Wellow in Nottinghamshire has the distinction of being one of only three places that has a permanent maypole.

Although originally cut from wood from Sherwood Forest the present maypole is made of steel and was erected in 1976 on the village green.

Around the green there are largely 17th and 18th century redbrick Pantiled houses as well as some cottages.

There is a small church St Swithin’s reputedly built by the Masons who completed nearby Rufford Abbey.

Following the Lane up from the church you come to Wellow Park and the site of a hill fortress known locally as Jordan’s Castle, which is surrounded by a broad moat.
