Downham

Downham village on the side of a hill overlooks Pendle Hill the village itself is popular with artists and photographers.

The preservation of the village owes much to the local family the Asshetons who for centuries owned most of the land and village they still live in the local manor house. The local Pub is named after the family and has the coat of arms above the door.

Assheton Hall was built-in the 13th century it was in the 1800’s that William Assheton built the local school and improved the church of St Leonard’s which is mostly medieval. The hall itself was also added to with a regency frontage.

The village lies on a roman road that connected the Roman forts of York and Ribchester it is said that the grave of a legionnaire can be seen protruding out from under the manor wall near the gate.

Walk down the hill to a little green and bridge over the village stream look out for the Tudor Old Well hall.

At the top of the village is another small green with pretty cottages grouped around it. Look back down the street for a good view of Pendle Hill.
