Dignified and genteel Harrogate is well known as for its wide-open spaces and flowers nearly 200 acres of parkland called the stray that curve round the southern edge of the town. The town grew as a spa when the springs were discovered in 1571 near Knaresborough; more were discovered in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The town quickly grew into one of the most fashionable health retreats in the country the sulphur and iron content in the water was said to cure almost anything. Harrogate’s demise as a spa dwindled as modern medicine developed new drugs; however, the town is a popular destination for visitors with its beautiful elegant buildings in dark Yorkshires stone and many shops.

These days it is also known as a conference centre, this new trade has created a boom for the town there are now trendy restaurants, bistros, hotels and all manner of associated businesses that cater for the delegates. The Montpelier quarter is perhaps the trendiest and most attractive area with its nice views overlooking prospect gardens.

The areas fine 19th century buildings have been transformed into art galleries, antique shops, cafes, and smart boutiques, lining the pedestrianised streets.

The Royal pump room can be visited to taste the water and to see the museum documenting the towns history as a spa, there are also amazing beautifully tiled Victorian Turkish baths on parliament street, it has steam rooms and a range of water therapy’s catering for ladies only sessions as well as a mixed one.

Harrogate is also renowned as the floral town and is home to all sorts of festivals and events hosting a spring and autumn flower show and the great Yorkshire show.
