This lovely Cumbria town is a delight to visit the main street is lined with many independent shops offering all types of goods for the shopper.

The town has lots of cafes restaurants and great pubs and is not only a superb destination for the day but also for a weekend break. Set in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside there are plenty of walks to be had. If you just want to take it easy soak up the atmosphere or browse the excellent shops.

Kirkby Lonsdale was a favourite destination for Victorian travellers and artists like JMW. Turner and the writer John Ruskin who described the view from the churchyard over the river Lune as "One of the loveliest views in England”. This well-known spot is now called Ruskin’s view it was also painted by Turner.

Once you have admired the view, why not explore St Mary's Church, a Norman structure with fine carved columns or walk along the river to Devils Bridge.

Kirkby Lonsdale bustles with activity, with a weekly market and many local events. The town centre is a mix of elegant 18th century buildings and stone cottages huddled around cobbled courtyards and narrow alleyways with names such as Salt Pie Lane and Jingling Lane.

Motorbike enthusiasts meet every Sunday at Devil's Bridge.
